Game 64
Ocean City 2, Norfolk 10
Tsuneo Sato (7-3) threw 8.0 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and was the benefactor of a big offensive showing from the Cavs. Thirteen hits and ten runs, I like it when things are clicking. Joe Payne, Brian Clien and Jacob Chaney each had 2 hits, Chaney added 3 RBI, and Jose Rodriquez lead the offense with 3 hits and 3 RBI, including a 2-run HR (5).
Game 65
Ocean City 1, Norfolk 4
Geoffrey Bayles threw 5.2 innings, givin gup 1 run on 5 hits for the ND. Dalton Whitaker pitched 1.1 innigns of perfect ball for the win (4-0) and Carlos Rodriquez closed out the 9th for the save (16). Pablo Freitas lead the offense with 3 hits, including a tie-break 3-run HR (10) in the 8th.
Game 66
Ocean City 4, Norfolk 5
Don Sweetapple (7-5) took the win going 7 solid innings, striking out 7, and giving up 4 runs on 7 hits. Carlos Rodriquez pitched the 9th for the save (17). The offense was leas by Jose Rodriquez who had 2 hits, including a 3-run HR (6). Howard Harper had a pinch hit double in the 7th for the game winning RBI... Elmer Hawkins threw one pitch, got an out, then limped off the field and had to be removed from the game.
Draft News: Jermey Jones was excited that we met (a little more, actually) his demand and signed the contract. He will be heading down to Jacksonville to start his career. Jones is a 5* star prospect and we are happy to have to him.
Game 67
Baltimore 3, Norfolk 0
Carlos Mateo (4-6) was a bad luck pitcher today, going 6.1 innings, giving up 1 run on 4 hits, but taking the loss. The offense just couldn't get anything started today, getting 7 hits and leaving 10 men on base (and we only struckout 4 times). Brian Cline and Gilberto Ramos each had 2 hits.
Game 68
Baltimore 4, Norfolk 2
Karl Armstrong (5-6) bounced back from a string of rocky starts with an 8 inning performance, giving up 2 runs on 7 hits. Carlos Rodriquez pitched thed 9th for the save (18). Joe Payne and Mauro Candelaria each had w hits. Brian Cline hit a solo-HR(9) and Jose Rodriquez hit a PH HR (7) in the 7th. Pablo Freitas was removed from the game in the 4th after hurting himself on a defensive play.
Injury News: Got a visit from Franky Gonzalez, our trainer, today and he didn't give me the news I was hoping to hear. First Elmer Hawlkins, he let me know Elmer strained his hamstring and will be out approx 7 weeks. Elmer has been lights out this season our our Lefty specialist. In 20 innings he has only given up 4 runs... Now the better'ish news. He let me know Pablo Freitas will only be out for 3 weeks with a slightly strained hammy. Pablo is the teamer in HR's (10) and RBI (41), so his bat will be missed!!.. Both players were placed on the 15-day DL.
Transaction News: To take Elmer Hawkins spot in the pen is Jose Martinez. He has been shakey in AAA and now will have an opportunity to prove his worth as a reliver with the big club. Martinez was 3-13 last year for the Cav's, and in 8 starts he is 1-4 6.20. Yes he is our best option (at least for now). I may have to look at the market and grab another lefty... Freitas' spot will be taken by Mason Foster. Mason got a cup of coffee earlier this season and didnt' get any AB's. With the depth in the OF he has been brought up to serve as a defensive replacement. Again this might be short lived, we will see. We could go with another pitcher. Not sure yet.
Game 69
Baltimore 3, Norfolk 5
Tsueno Sato started went 2 innings of perfect ball before having ot leave in the 3rd after his first pitch of the inning. Hopefully its nothing more than a tweak and he will be back soon... Ron Harris with 3 innings, giving up 3 runs and Bill Lee went (1-0) 2 perfect innings for the win and to pick up Sato. Carlos Rodriquez shut the door for the save (19). Mauro Candelaria had 3 hits and 2 runs, and Ron Alder had 2 hits, including a HR (6) and 2 RBI to lead the offense.
Injury News: Tsuneo Sato was diagnosed with a mild shoulder strain and will end up missing a start. Jose Martinez who was just recalled will be starting in his place. Hopefully this isn't a sign of thigns to come and just a minor injury.
Players of the Week:
Delaware: Charles Culligan (New Castle Colonials) 10-18, 3 HRs and 6 RBI.
MarVa: Jose Rodriquez (Norfolk Cavaliers) 6-12 3 HR, 8 RBI
* Jose is the 2nd Cav in a row. You know things are going well.
Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (117.6)
2) Dover Generals (108.4)
3) Richmond Cardinals (107.1)
4) Annapolis Admirals (101.3)
5) New Castle Colonials (94.9)
GM Notes: I have to admit I am quite surprised to wake up today and see us as the top team in the power rankings!! I haven't been talking about how lucky we have been with out suffering any major injuries, but this week showed us we aren't immune to them. We had 2 major injuries and 1 minor one. Pablo Freitas isn't having the year we've been expecting from him, but he has been one of our offensive leaders all season. Hopefully losing him won't slow our offense down too much... Everyone plays a role on this team. Last weak Tony Soto carried the offense, this week Jose Rodriquez took the load. The offense will need to step it up for the next 3-4 weeks with Freitas out of action, but as long as the pitching continues to pitch like they have been we will just need to score some runs. We are still 6th in runs scored. But our pitchers are now #2 in Runs against, #2 in Starters ERA and #1 in Bullpen ERA! And the best news yet our Defensive Efficiency is over 700 @.702. Things are going good here in Norfolk.
