I'd rather manage too. But, I've seen some dumb moves by GMs. So, I just know he'd sign some worthless FA 3B in the offseason, because my ROY 3B, happened to be a prototypical leadoff (leading the league in steals, triples) instead of a HR hitter type that he thinks HAS to play in every position. (I bring this up every now and then, but it drove me up the wall seeing that GM do that in my game all those years ago).
Or more commonly, paying top dollar for a mediocre hitting, average defensively at best SS, because I was too successful defensively with my Gold Glove SS who hit .220. (that guy he signed might get to PH and come in at SS a lot in late games when I am trailing, but it will be a waste of money for the role he ends up with). Point is, how I look at building a team and how that AI GM would is often so vastly different. Well, what seem conventionally valuable to him, might be worthless to me. (and a SS who is average or worse defensively better absolutely rake on offense, to play there long term for me, for example). So, I like being a GM to that extent.
Course, monetary dealings, and fan bases do bore the heck out of me for example, though I'd be afraid not to have. I like playing with a mid-market type team. It gives me the most ability to play the game my way for one. So, I did need finances, to get as much as i can to have that competitive team, but not too much that I end up as the Yankees
