Australia - Welterweights - Round 1
Round 1:
Jack Carroll 6-1-0 (3) vs Billy Williams 2-1-0 (1) - Carroll boxed a smart fight, keeping Williams at bay with crisp jabs and fast combos to control the early going. It was a stiff jab that opened a gash on the right eyelid of Williams in the 4th round that ended it immediately as the claret was everywhere.
George Barnes 1-1-0 (0) vs Mick Dunn 2-1-0 (2) - A lackadaisical performance by both fighters allowed Dunn to stay in it til the end. Barnes did barely enough to win the final frame to pull out the 143-142, 143-142 and 144-141 decision. Barnes needs to put out more effort as the #2 seed if he is to continue on in this tourney.
Fred Kay 2-1-1 (0) vs Billy Maber 1-1-0 (1) - Kay landed 37.8% of his shots while only allowing Maber 12.8% yet the judging was much closer than expected on one card as it was scored 147-140 (my score as well) 146-141 and 143-143 for the majority decision by Kay.
Jeff Malcolm 3-1-1 (1) vs Glen Collis 1-1-0 (0) - Collis dropped a 15 UD to the favorite Malcolm in their last meeting. This was another tactical bout, with Malcolm building up a lead and Collis not having the skills or power to close the gap in the latter rounds as Malcolm takes the 145-141, 146-140 and 143-143 majority decision.
Julian Holland 1-1-0 (0) vs Clem Sands 1-1-0 (1) - It was the power of Holland that made the difference in this one, scoring a 3rd round knockdown before landing the KO shot in the 8th round as Sands was out for well past the count!
Alf Morey 1-1-0 (0) vs Tom Tracey 1-1-0 (0) - Not a particularly titillating bout despite Morey dropping Tracey in the 6th round. The latter parts of the fight both men were sloppy offensively leading to close low scoring affairs with the judges scroing it 144-140, 143-140 and 143-141 for the winner by unanimous decision, Morey.
Lester Ellis 1-1-0 (1) vs George Sands 0-1-0 (0) - Ellis held the lead on the strength of a knockdown in the 8th round, but Sands came back strong the next round, winning it. In the 10th round Sands dropped Ellis for the KO to pull off the upset win.
Billy Todd 2-1-0 (1) vs Nick Tetoros 0-1-0 (0) - Todd defeated Tetoros by KO in the 11th last time they met. Tetoros came out and dominated the first three rounds but then the pendulum swung Todd's way as he dropped Tetoros in the 4th and 6th. In the 7th Todd was cut, then went down as Tetoros landed a hook to the head. The cut widened later in the round and the referee halted the bout evening this series and sending Tetoros to the next round.
