There is a dark colored background image that is supposed to be displayed, but it only works at certain resolutions.
So far I've only gotten it to work at 1024x768(windowed), 1440x900(windowed). Try one of those resolutions. It doesn't work at my native 1920x1080.

I was running at 1920x1080 (fullscreen) will try other resolutions. Thanks!
