I prefer to start with an MLB league so I know the players a little bit for the first few years. I also prefer to play with high school and college feeders for stats only fictional league. By the time I am 7-10 seasons in I have a pretty good feel for the fictional players and I can still tell you, years later, who some of the stars were in previous leagues. In fact as I get older I get confused and I wasted a few minutes yesterday looking for Mitch Berry, a switch-hitting outfielder who I remembered playing for the Expos. (He exists only in OOTP.)

I don't like to do the sim-25-years-and-erase thingy and as I understand it, it is really no longer necessary. I always start with the Braves and play them to the point where all the real players are gone and the whole league is fictional, which takes about 20-25 seasons until 42yo Bryce Harper or Jason Heyward retires. Then I start over.
