The game requires players to have a certain level of real life innings or certain levels of defensive abilities to earn a rating at a position. So, in theory, it's possible for a player not to have a rating at a position because he falls below these thresholds.

I've seen it happen, and it can be frustrating, especially when a player played a few games at a position but only in spot duty, so his historical innings pitched don't quality him for that position.

This is why it's best to use 3-year recalc, although that doesn't fix things necessarily because it's still possible for a player to have minimal stats at a given position and only have stats in that role for one of the three years.
