There have been too many young stars who simply flame out after a year or so of stardom to get caught up in the hype (Alex Avila is a Tigers' example). I sometimes wonder if all the hype causes some of the flame outs; players feel too much pressure and just can't handle it. But mostly it's just reality kicking in, pitchers figure batters out and vice versa, the waxing and waning of confidence over a career (rather than a season) which some can handle and some cannot, etc.
