I guess my question really boils down to why offer the role for such a limited circumstance? There are many of us who don't like the conventional wisdom on bullpen use, prefer the Bill James recommendation of situational relief pitching where you put your best reliever into a more important game situation such as tie game with runners on base in the 7th or 8th inning rather than in the 9th with a three run lead. The Stopper role would seem to me to be just that sort of role. Yet I can only use it only when Closer use is on Rare? Why? Why not have that role always available for those of us who will use it for our top reliever? I'd like to know why Markus and friends coded it that way and for what reason we can't always have it available?
