It worked for me when I had a player "stuck" once before. The fact that it didn't work here is a bit disturbing. Whatever's wrong with Curt's league is something I can't recall anybody ever bringing up, and that's even more disturbing.

According to OOTP itself, OOTP MLB play (modern and historical) outnumbers OOTP fictional play three to one.
