You'll see what you'd expect: in the historical nameset, you will see mostly Anglo names and a lot of older style first names that were more common in the early decades of baseball. Think Cyrus Murphy and John Grant.
With the modern nameset, you see more 'ethnic' names and first names that have become popular in recent years, and it will resemble more of what you see in the contemporary MLB. Think Tanner Wilson and Guillermo Gutierrez.
However, keep in mind that modifying both the world_default.xml file and your ethnicities file can be critical in getting the blend that you want.
Even if you use the historical nameset, the distribution of ethnicities is not accurate. I tend to adjust my ethnicities file to reflect the estimated U.S. ethnic populations as of 1900 or whatever year I'm starting. OOTP tends to create too many non-Caucasian players for historical leagues and too many 'ethnic' names, so this requires adjusting the ethnicities file. Some people even edit their first names and last names files to create more accuracy.
