Bantamweights Third Round

Charles LeDoux 17-3-2 (12) vs Abner Mares 32-8-2 (18)

The first six rounds were tightly contested with both men banging away on the inside with body shots, while LeDoux connected with clubbing right hands from the outside while Abner dealt out a tighter attack with short hooks and right hands. Early in round seven Charles dropped him with a hook to the liver; Mares barely beat the count and only his courage took him to the bell as the Frenchman hammered away with rights and lefts. It took two more rounds for Mares to recover but in the tenth he rocked LeDoux with a double hook and pasted him with combinations during a dominant stanza. After Abner boxed well in the eleventh, Charles dug deep in the final round and took it behind his right hand. That, along with the knockdown, enabled him to take the tough UD. 115-112 x3

Terry McGovern 37-4 (26) vs Anselmo Moreno 19-3-1 (6)

You couldn't produce a sharper contrast in styles if you wanted to and it produced compelling action. After Moreno undressed him in the opening round with deft movement and combinations, Terry bulled inside over the next five rounds and hammered away with powerful right hands that shook Anselmo on several occasions. With most of the action taking place with his back to the ropes Moreno showed off his countering and defensive prowess with short left hands and uppercuts, but the aggression of McGovern was building a lead.

Sensing it slipping away, Moreno became aggressive in the seventh and he pushed Terry back with 3 and 4 punch combinations in a round that saw Anselmo launch well over 100 punches. McGovern caught Moreno early in round eight with a right hand and he floored him with an uppercut for a six count. Another knockdown followed in the ninth and McGovern carried the action down the stretch to take the wider than it looked UD. 119-108 & 118-109 x2

Mark Johnson 57-7-2 (32) vs Charley Phil Rosenberg 16-5-1 (4)

This was a technical battle that saw both fighters work behind their jabs. Rosenberg was slightly more aggressive and he opened up a cut over Johnson's left eye with several right hands in the eight round and carried that momentum into the ninth where he staggered Johnson with an uppercut. Too Sharp bounced back and had the crowd behind him in the final round when he dazzled with precision combos. It wasn't quite enough and Charley took the SD. 118-113, 114-116 & 117-114

Lupe Pintor 35-4-2 (27) vs (WBA) David Kui Kong Young 18-3 (7)

After a feeling out opening round they went toe to toe in the second with Pintor ripping hooks to the body while the champion scored with one-twos to the head. They continued to go at it in round three and a right hand opened a bad gash over the challengers left eye, Guadalupe stormed back with a series of hooks to the head and body and a vicious uppercut dropped Young for a seven count late in the thrilling frame. Kui Kong boxed well in the fourth, but once again Pintor hurt him with his hook in round five and he pounded the champion along the ropes over the final minute of the round.

David spent the majority of the sixth with his back to the ropes and, though he countered well, Pintor teed off with devastating body work and hooks to the head. Feeling the urgency Kui Kong met him in the center of the ring for round seven and slugged away on even terms with his challenger until a short hook caught Lupe flush on the jaw and dropped him for a five count with seconds remaining in another action packed round. The frenzied action became more measured and Pintor's body work started to take the steam out of Young. He was already ahead when he floored the soon to be former champion with a crushing left hook just before the final bell to punctuate his impressive UD. 145-138 x2 & 144-138
