If the reconstructed inning (sans errors) would have resulted in runs then they are earned.

The easiest example is runner on first reaches second on a passed ball. The pitcher then walks the batter. Since the runner would have gone to second anyway the passed ball is moot for the purpose of calculating earned runs. A subsequent error could cause it to be unearned.


From rule 10.16(a)

A wild pitch is solely the pitcher's fault and shall contribute to an earned run just as a base on balls or a balk.
