March 1977: Spring Training

The Angels invited 32 players to camp. We finished 12-12, third of the AL West teams and two games behind the White Sox.

CF Gil Flores [24](Rookie) sprained his knee on March 24 and is out for 3-4 weeks. That means he'll have to try all the harder to make the roster when he gets back.

RP Mike Cuellar [39](4-13 4.96 1 SV w BAL) sprained his elbow on the 24th and will miss 2 weeks. Like Flores, Cuellar will have to earn his position back.

RF Bobby Bonds [31](.265 10-54) separated his shoulder and will miss 5-6 weeks. "I'm gonna spend time with my son," he said. "Bring him up right." You do that Bobby. This is a major loss to the club as, unlike the others, he would have been on my opening day roster.

A few random thoughts:

I have three SP worth talking about. There's a fourth who Manager Norm Sherry believes belongs in reserve, and I tend to agree. Sherry was using Cuellar as a 5th starter before his injury, and RP Wayne Simpson (0-3 9.31 in ST) as my fourth. This will not do.

With Bonds and Flores out, I'm obliged to promote an OF I didn't even invite to Spring Training camp just to make sure I have enough.

Major Spring Training Injuries:

Cubs: RP Jim Todd [29](7-8 3.81 4 SV w OAK) will miss six months, perhaps the whole season, with a torn flexor tendon.

Cincinnati: RP Mike Caldwell [28](1-7 4.86 2 SV w SF) will miss 4 months with bone chips in his elbow.

Montreal: RP Dan Warthen [24](2-10 5.30) will miss 4 months with a torn rotator cuff.

Pittsburgh: RP Larry Demerey [23](10-7 3.17 2 SV) will miss the year with a torn UCL.

Pittsburgh: RP Rich Goosage [25](9-17 3.94 1 SV w CHW) will miss the year with a torn UCL.

Baltimore: RP Earl Stephenson [29](Last played '72 MIL) will miss 5 months due to shoulder inflammation.

Minnesota: CL Tom Johnson [25](3-1 2.61) had his season end before it began after he tore his rotator cuff.
