Bantamweights Second Round
Owen Moran 29-8-3 (13) vs Freddie Gilroy 18-3 (8)
After a strong opening round from Gilroy, Moran ripped into him with a relentless assault beginning in round two that left Freddie with a busted mouth, split open forehead and a badly swollen left eye by the fifth round, that disfigurement coupled with a knockdown from a huge right hand forced the ref to step in midway through that stanza.
Midget Wolgast 41-4-1 (12) vs Tancy Lee 15-6 (5)
Midget’s jab opened a bad cut over the right eye in round two and he dropped Lee in the fourth with a short hook to the temple. The bout was never competitive and the wound led to a stoppage in round seven.
Frankie Genaro 34-6-3 (5) vs Alfonso Zamora 17-3-1 (14)
Genaro showed his class in the first two rounds as he eluded Zamora’s bombs and peppered him with crisp counters. Round three went just as well for two minutes and fifty seconds, and then Alfonso ripped a vicious hook to the body that put Genaro down for a nine count. Frankie never really got his legs back and Zamora closed up his right eye until he split it wide open during a barrage of shots late in round nine that led to the referee calling a halt.
Veeraphol Sahaprom 18-2 (8) vs Miguel Lora 16-3-2 (9)
This was a violent, and even, bout that saw them both endure swelling all around their right eyes as both men landed their left hands almost at will. Sahaprom rocked Miguel in the fourth with a nasty uppercut and hammered along the ropes for the final half minute. Lora began to really strafe the Thai fighter with nasty combos over the final minute of round eight and he dropped him early in the ninth with a double hook, the follow up flurry caused the ref to step in.
Luis Perez 37-6 (24) vs Charles LeDoux 16-3-2 (11)
The Frenchman dominated Perez from the outset and a series of pulverizing right hands in round four led to the TKO victory.
Terry McGovern 36-4 (25) vs Bobby Green 10-9-3 (3)
Green fought a spoiling type fight as he refused to engage with McGovern and while it drew the ire of the fans, it allowed him to keep the fight close. Terry’s pressure increased and he was in control when he dropped Bobby twice in round eleven, the second time foe the ten count.
Mark Johnson 56-7-2 (31) vs Roger Gonzalez 17-4 (9)
Gonzalez banged well on the inside over the first three rounds and uppercuts drew swelling from Johnson’s left eye. Then early in round four, Too sharp caught him with a strong left hand and followed up with a dazzling three punch combo that put Roger down for the count.
Lupe Pintor 34-4-2 (27) vs Raul Perez 42-18-1 (30)
A nice back and forth battle between two proud Mexicans produced a lot of fireworks early, especially in the fifth round when they traded brutal power shots for the full three minutes. Pintor’s body work began to pay off late and he floored Raul with a hook in round ten and closed strong to take the UD. 116-111, 116-112 & 114-113
