Interesting draft pool, appears to have more SP depth, at the college level, than I remember in awhile. Picking 4th and 19th in round 1. I do have extra cash to spend if need be, but I am unsure of how I’d like to proceed this year. I could re-draft last years #1, Carlos Hernandez, if he makes it to 4, but his price is once again 8M. Maybe I go the entire draft on my scouts for once?
1st Round
#1) Providence Black Sox-Julio Herrera SP (18) 6’5” 205 Brainerd HS, MN-Low 90’s lefty, 4 above average pitches, durable as hell, 3.4M ask.
#2) New Orleans Voodoo-Ernesto Davila SP (18) 6’3” 190 Baker HS, CA-Mid 90’s righty with an outstanding FB. Concerns around his ability to stay healthy and his ability to work deep into games.
#3) San Jose Sharks-Bartolo Sandoval SP (18) 6’2” 190 Montgomery Central HS, TN-Mid to upper 90’s power right hander. 3rd straight HS SP to open the draft. Durable, top of the rotation arm.
#4) Chicago Iron Pigs-Carlos Hernadez SP (20) 6’1” 180 U. of Mississippi-Mid to upper 90’s with the ability to eat huge innings. 4 pitch guy with outstanding FB, Slider and Change up, workable CB.
THOUGHTS-Hernandez is once again a unanimous choice amongst the scouts. Still asking 8M but apparently more flexible (heard that last year. Merlin Mills a HS RH, and college OF Michael Dwyer are the other two options.
#5) New York Knights-Bill Morrow C (19) 6’3” 210 Hale HS, WI-OBP machine, big pop and a very good defender already.
#6) Baltimore Colts-Merlin Mills SP (19) 5’10” 180 Lutheran HS, CO-Mid to upper 90’s power arm.
#7) Hawaii Warriors-Michael Dwyer OF (22) 6’1” 190 Oklahoma St.-GG defense, 30/30+ bat, legs (both our potential next picks go at 6 and 7). Looking at HS SS Orlando Garcia, College SP Juan Gamboa and College SP Chris Keen as possible next picks if they last.
#8) New Hampshire Fisher Cats-Jose Lugo SP (18) 6’7” 220 Dubois Central Catholic HS, PA-#1 body, 92-94 FB/CB with a good change up. Outstanding worker, puts the time in to prepare.
#9) Houston Roughriders-Chris Keen SP (20) 6’4” 205 Pacific, CA-mid to upper 90’s lefty. Works outstanding cutter, slider with a ++ change up.
#10) Columbus Clippers-Orlando Garcia SS (18) 6’ 170 Poquoson HS, VA-Switch hitting left side of the infield guy. Great range, top of the order OBP guy, runs very well.
Ok now our next 2 are gone. Gamboa is the kid left we’d look at for our next pick, though I don’t see him making it.
#11) Edmonton Trappers-Leroy Balfour IF/OF (21) 6’ 185 U. of South Carolina-can play 1st, 2nd, 4rd and all 3 OF positions, all above average. Incredibly versatile defender with above average power.
#12) Las Vegas 51’s-Juan Gamboa SP (21) 6’2” 200 New Mexico State-Mid to upper 90’s power left hander. Power sinker, outstanding CB and slider too.
#13) Corpus Christi Hooks-Art Murphy OF (20) 6’4” 205 U. of Minnesota-LH power bat, corner OF, below average runner.
#14) Los Angeles Wizards-Dinh Xuan OF (18) 6’1” 180 Burroughs HS, MO-Many had him as #1 prospect entering draft. Top of the order legs, ok pop, good gap power and high average bat. Will get his share of K’s
#15) Dayton Dragons-Angel Rodriguez 1B (22) 6’2” 215 UTSA, TX-LH power bat, great zone awareness. Base clogger but decent defender.
#16) El Paso Diablos-Jaime Arredondo SP (18) 6’3” 190 Georgia Force HS, GA-LHP with 4 pitches, works 90-92 with 3 good secondary pitches. Horse, and about as smart as one.
#17) Arizona Rattlers-Reynaldo Castillo SP (18) 6’1” 185 Hooks HS, TX-LHP works 91-93 with very good change, and split. Somewhat of a smart alec who has had issues with teammates.
#18) Alaska Avalanche-Harris Boucher SP (19) 6’ 185 Frederick HS, CO-Low 90’s RHP, big sinker, decent CB, questions around 3rd pitch developing. Eats innings.
#19) Chicago Iron Pigs-Cedric Hardy OF (22) 6’ 180 Notre Dame-++ runner, can play LF right now, great eye, RHH.
THOUGHTS-Scouts are saying Cedric Hardy, OF from Notre Dame. Outstanding awareness of the zone, ++ runner, base stealer, well above average defender though his arm will play to LF most likely. Hits RH. Only issue for me is he’s 22 already. The guy we’ll try to wait on is LH RP Orlando Ortiz, given our dearth of LH relievers.
#20) Boston Bombers-Carlos Garcia SS (18) 5’10” 155 Rensselaer Central HS, IN-Leadoff bat, legs, no pop.

REMAINING PICKS
#3 11th pick Sup. Rd. (34th) Jamal bin Jafar SP (18) 5’10” 165 United Faith Christian Academy HS, NC-Right who works 89-90 with 5 pitches, including a good knuckle curve. High risk (size issues) high reward pick.
#4 22nd 2nd rd (59th) Rafael Torres 1B/DH (22) 6’ 205 Mississippi St, MS-Outstanding eye, good pop.
#5 28th 2nd rd (65th) Patrick O’Sullivan SS/3B (19) 6’2” 185 Nazareth Academy, IL-very good contact bat, very good range and defender, ok runner.
