The Jets used their first pick on the top corner in the draft Dee Milliner, the best cornerback in this draft but not nearly as good as Morris Claiborne and Patrick Peterson, the top corner of each of the last 2 drafts. Cornerback wasn't a position of need, but it gives them strong depth at the position. Still, addressing a position where you're okay at and turning it into a strength is the move of an 11-5 team, not a team like the Jets, especially when the perfect player for their needs in Chance Warmack was still on the board.
With the 13th pick the Jets picked their third first round defensive lineman in three years in Sheldon Richardson. And boy, do I absolutely hate this pick. What's the need of a defensive lineman who can't play the nose in the 3-4, and won't be better than Wilkerson or Coples on the ends? Hell, his best spot is 4-3 DT, so I seriously don't understand the pick. What I'm thinking with these first two picks is that the Jets want to move Kyle Wilson to be the nickel back giving them one of the better nickel back's in the NFL, and then using Richardson, Wilkerson and Coples as 3 of the 4 lineman as they use the nickel more. While a valid strategy, it goes completely against what Rex Ryan has done his entire career, being married to an aggressive 3-4 defense. It seems like GM John Idzik wants Rex out and wants the team to move back to the 4-3.
Then the Jets used their second round pick on QB Geno Smith. Not happy about this one either. What I wanted out of this draft was for the Jets to address key needs at guard, outside linebacker, safety, tight end and/or running back to build a solid baseline for when they go 4-12 next year, and then pick one of the strong quarterbacks in next year's class. Instead the team added to two strengths and then picked up a player who won't fit their new West Coast offense and is overrated as a draft prospect, all while Gavin Escobar, Vance McDonald, Eddie Lacy and Sio Moore were still on the board.
In the third round the team got guard Brian Winters. I'm happy with this pick, but would've greatly preferred Warmack.
So overall the Jets completely botched this draft in my eyes. With who was on the board at the times, I would've preferred to see them go Chance Warmack at 9th, Jarvis Jones at 13, and Gavin Escobar in the 2nd round.
