I'll be the first to admit I don't really udnerstand the era settings, but my explanation is just from what I've seen. When I redo the recalculate function it seems to subtley perpetuate trends like you are experiencing. That's why I like to just put random tweaks into the settings for more variety. I wish I understood the settings more, but just struggle along like everyone else.
