I think if you are using that function where it will adjust era settings for you after each year it has a tendency to lean in one direction or the other. If you started out getting a slight bit more offense than the ratings were set to then when you adjust, they tend to adjust in that direction, and vice versa, until finally you have a real trend on your hands.
I like to tweak my era settings manually every now and then for variety's sake.
