It might not be sensible to you, but if the development of the game stops and the company goes under or the ownership decides there's not enough profit to sustain it or make it worthwhile anymore, then I'm sure there would be a lot of unhappy and disappointed users. And you might be one of them.
Sticking with a current version only goes so far. Yes, a community can keep an abandoned series going with mods for a while, but almost inevitably the user support dies out completely and then there's nothing left.
