OOTP 14 The Road to Release: Announcing a New Sports Sim Based on Hit Movie 'BASEketball'
OOTP Developments may have the releases of OOTP 14 and iOOTP 2013 on the horizon, along with the open Beta of Franchise Hockey Manager available now, but the company has never shied from adding to its roster of sports management sims. With that in mind, OOTP Developments is proud to announce its next sim: BASEketball 2013-14, based on the hit Universal Pictures movie.
“Late one evening, after a stein or two of fine German ale, it occurred to me that all the major sports have been simmed to death,” recalled OOTP Developments founder and CEO Markus Heinsohn. “I realized we needed an untapped market, and while flipping channels, I found one: the movie ‘BASEketball.’ It took another stein or two of beer to convince Andreas, but eventually he warmed up to the idea.”
“Not really,” said OOTP Developments co-founder Andreas Raht, “but Markus wouldn’t stop going on and on about it. It was easier to say ‘Yes’ than keep listening to him.”
BASEketball combines basketball and baseball by requiring players to shoot baskets and move runners along a baseball diamond. The complexity of the shot dictates if it’s a single, double, triple, or home run, and defenders can psyche out the shooter by yelling insults at him.
A typical BASEketball field
Heinsohn observed: “The scene in which National BASEketball League founder Ted Denslow says that it’s a sport where ‘any normal Joe can be a sports hero’ really struck a chord with me. This is a sport for everyone, not just guys who work hard all their lives to excel and play professionally. I mean, how elitist is that?”
BASEketball 2013-14 will include the following features:
- All nine original 1997 National BASEketball League (NBL) teams, including the Milwaukee Beers, Roswell Aliens, and New Jersey Informants
- Full NBL rosters with all the real players, including the Milwaukee Beers’ 1997 Denswell Cup-winning squad consisting of Joe “Coop” Cooper, Doug “Sir Swish” Remer, and Kenny “Squeak” Scolari
- The ability to begin play at any time from the NBL’s historic 1992 founding and move forward from there, with expansion teams appearing in Morgantown, Knoxville, Cairo (Illinois), and other cities along the way
- A wide array of customization functions, so you can, for example, make psyche-outs as tame or as offensive as you want, with the results reflected in the play-by-play (“Remer drops his pants and psyches out the Informants’ shooter!” is one such example)
- Full player ratings, including Shooting, Psyche-Out, and Ability to Use the Word “Dude” as More Than a Noun
- An annual New Player Draft, with players drawn primarily from fraternity houses and bars

BASEketball 2013-14 is currently in closed Beta, with an open pre-order Beta release expected this summer, followed by a closed pre-order Gamma pre-release in the fall, and then something else by winter. “We’re still figuring out the release schedule,” said Heinsohn.
After BASEketball 2013-14 ships, Heinsohn plans on setting his sights on another adaptation:
Calvinball. “That one will be easy,” he said, “because all I need to do is come up with a random rules generator.”
