Teams that finished at the bottom of the Heartland League totem poll in 1984 may have something to look forward to in the coming months -- The First-Year Player Draft. As the end of the regular season draws to a close, only four teams have a mathematical chance at championship glory, and the remaining eight are forced to begin looking ahead to the future. Perhaps the best player in the upcoming draft is 22 year-old Purdue Boilermakers starting pitcher Gerald Humphrey, who is just coming off yet another incredible season at the collegiate level. Over four seasons with Purdue, Humphrey posted a 31-21 record, 2.00 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, .174 BAA, and a 12.20 K/9 ratio.

Scouts are describing the six-foot, two-hundred and five pound Indiana native as "having the tools to emerge as one of the best starters we have seen in years". The compliments are flattering, and well deserved for a player who's fastball has been known to reach speeds as high as 99 MPH.

On a personal standpoint, Humphrey is described as a team leader with a high intrinsic motivation for winning ballgames.

Teams that may have a legitimate chance at the starter include: Poplar Bluff, Duluth, and barring a last-minute surge by the Danger -- Cedar Rapids, Oshkosh, and Bay City remain in the running. Humphrey is not projected to be on the board past the second selection.
