Sounds like some sort of corruption in the PLAYERS.DAT file. Could've been caused if the OOTP program was shut down abnormally due to a crash, lockup, power outage, etc. Possibly even bad sectors or FAT table on the hard drive.
Only way to fix it would be to restore the league file from a backup if you have one.
