I came into hockey pretty late, not really until after college. Probably because I didn't live in a town where it was readily available. Saw a few ECHL games starting in maybe 1996 or 1997. We had the Columbus Chill.
Reminds me of the funniest thing I ever saw live. The game was getting a little chippy late. The teams setup for a face off, puck drops, and two enforcer-types on one side of the circle immediate drop sticks/gloves without playing the puck and just go. Good long fight, couple side fights, nice day at the arena.
The ref and linesman finally get the tough guys separated, but they continue to jaw back and forth the whole way across the ice. They are each closely escorted all the way over to the box. Finally, the ref disengages to make the call at the scorer's table. Once the ref gets like 4 feet away, one player charges at the other one entering the box. He pushes him into the penalty box and they start going again inside the box! Needless to say, neither of those guys played any more hockey that night.
Come to think of it, I'm not sure how they ever got them separated again. I can't imagine going into the box to break up a hockey fight.
