If I set it to Fixed, if the wildcard game winner has a better record than anyone they play they will get homefield advantage. There has gotta be a way to set up the current playoff format right.

Try putting the wild card game above the #1 bye matchup, and keep it at fixed. I
think the team listed physically lower on the screen gets home field advantage if you leave it at fixed.
