Paul Lyons locked horns with Topeka rookie Tomas Hampton today, and both pitchers came away winners. The ballgame, however, went to the Cowboys. John O'Flanagan's two-out triple in the 11th scored Kelly Judson with the game's only run. Cheyenne won 1-0, their sixth straight victory.
But the stars of the game were the starting pitchers. Hampton went 7 innings, giving up just 1 hit. He walked 2 and struck out 7. He threw 99 pitches.
Paul Lyons went 8 innings, giving up 3 hits. He walked 1 and struck out 6. He threw 110 pitches.
Hampton was the Owls' number one pick in last season's amateur draft; he was chosen #6. And he was masterful today, even though his club couldn't pull out the game for him. Lyons was equally impressive, although Cowboy fans have come to expect dominating performances like the one he delivered today. Lyons' ERA on the year so far is 1.93.
"Would have hated to spoil that pitching performance today," quipped Manager Terry Taylor. "Johnnie O really delivered." He did. But those fans who appreciate fine pitching received much more.
