Gillespie Wins Gold Arm 2nd Straight Year
Cold Creek's veteran right hander J. J. Gillespie copped the Ruthlandian Union Golden Arm Award for the second straight season with a terrific 26-13 record, beating out two youngsters, Marston's Pat Brown and St. John's Jeremy Kirk.
The 29-year-old Gillespie rang up 26 wins and was tied with North Hills' Dave Michael for the most victories in the IPA this year. Gillespie started 39 games, completed 22 of them, fired 6 shutouts and posted a 2.06 ERA for the Catamounts, who came in second to champ Eastshore in the RU East. The 6-year vet is 77-41 overall with a sparkling 2.32 ERA. This is the second time Gillespie has received the honor. He won it last year along with the Ruthlandian Most Valuable Player plaque.
Brown, only 23 years old, was 25-11 with a 2.69 ERA for the Marston Nine of the RU East, the fourth-place club in the RU East. He was second to Gillespie in The Islandian Times Golden Arm poll. Brown stood out with 28 complete games and 242 strikeouts, both of which led the IPA.
Jeremy Kirk was one of the reasons St. John wound up a close second to RU South champion Crystal Lake. At 21. Kirk registered a 23-10 mark with a 2.73 ERA, 23 complete games and 4 shutouts in 38 starts. He ranked third in the balloting.
