2018 Off Season
Brooklyn Owner passes, son to take over the franchise.
Brooklyn Cyclones owner Juan Fernandez passed away today, and son Kevin will now assume control of the Cyclones franchise. Brooklyn has made the post season 2 times in the past 7 seasons, and missed, by a 163rd game loss, the post season this year. Kevin is reportedly a tolerant guy but very controlling of the financial side of things.
Season ending personel changes, expiring contracts.
Manager Jared Smith and pitching coach Pete Hardin’s contracts are up. There is no middle ground for Smith, he’s looking for 1.5M or more. 62 year old bench coach Art Mcpherson has been offered and accepted the job for the 2019 season. The plan is to hand the reigns to Hitting coach Ron Glass in the next year or two, depending on how long Art wants to manage. Both are outstanding baseball men.
General Manager news:
1) Michigan has fired Nick White as their GM. Coming from El Paso in 2017 his teams managed a 143-181 record the past 2 years.
2) Alaska fired Ted Johnston. After coming from Dayton in 2015 the Avalanche made the playoffs in 2016 but have won 90/83/73 games over the 3 seasons Johnston’s been the GM.
3) LA fired GM Juan Castillo after their 77-85 last place finish.
Manager news:
Dallas fired Manager Antonio Lopez after 2 seasons of 65 and 66 wins. The Texans have made moves to get much stronger on the field and I’m guessing the ‘rebuilding’ mentality is now out the door, with the manager.
