OFF SEASON NEWS

10/28
Fresno nabs SP from the Bombers:
Boston dealt 26 year old Tom Dougherty to the Fresno Grizzlies for 22 year old OF prospect Jose Garcia. Dougherty was 3-5 in 16 games, 9 starts, with a 4.09 ERA. Dougherty was a waiver claim by Boston in 2016. Garcia is a speedy corner OF prospect with a great eye who is an outstanding corner OF’er.

10/29
Iron Pigs sign backup outfielder Becker:
Chicago today agreed to a 3 year 5.58M contract extension with 27 year old Troy Becker. Becker his .250/.342/.352 in 61 games this season in Chicago. His best year was 2015 when he hit .306/.386/.407 for Fresno. He was part of the World Series winning Driller club in 2016.

11/1
Managed to snag former Dayton Dragon SS Matt Walls to manage in Class A Denison. The 39 year old was a part time backup IF but is reportedly an excellent players manager and an otherworldly instructor in all phases of the game. He’s a future IBL manager in waiting.

11/5
River Cats ink former Chicago hurler to extension:
Sacramento has signed former Iron Pig Mike Davis to a 3 year 22.5M dollar contract extension. Davis was 11-9 4.28 this past year, in 28 starts.

(Not bad money but he hasn’t spent a full year on the roster in 5 years. He’s just 26 so it’s not a roster killing deal by any means. He was the pitcher we sent to Sacramento for Bryan Rogers).

IBL’S BIGGEST CONTRACTS
Bill Hill (SI) 20.2 Million
Vincente Romero (HOU) 19.8 Million
Colin Durham (FRE) 18 Million
Rich Stone (HOU) 17.6 Million
Steve Whiteway (BRO) 17.4 Million

11/7
IBL MANAGERS OF THE YEAR

It should come as little surprise that Chicago manager Jared Smith took home his 2nd manager of the year, and is the first IBL skipper to ever win the award in both the Coastal and Frontier leagues. Smith guided the Iron Pigs to an IBL best (and record) 113 wins and their first world title this year. He has 1 year and 475K remaining on his contract. And he’s looking for a 1.02M 4 year extension. We’ve extended a 750K 4 year offer, at 64 it’s likely his last deal and we need to seriously consider our options moving forward. It’s 99% likely the next manager of the Iron Pigs will be an internal hire, we’ve got far too many talented folks to look outside for a replacement.

Sacramento’s Bartolo Romero was named the Coastal League Manager of the year for the 2017 season. Romero was in his 6th season managing the club and after 3 straight years missing the post season he guided them back with a 100 win season this year. At 36 he figures to be just starting an outstanding career on the bench.

11/9
Fresno and Michigan swap:
Michigan continues to confound IBL folks with their various moves. Today dealing 27 year old shortstop Pat Dobson to Fresno for the #83 IBL prospect infielder Jesus Camacho. Camacho was the Grizzlies #2 pick in the ’15 draft out of Zapata HS in Texas. Michigan signed Dobson to a 4 year 34M dollar extension last off season. The Grizzlies also sent 750K in cash. Dobson is a career .232 hitter with 71 homers in 568 games. Had his best season last year hitting .254 with 32 homers and 89 RBI’s in 155 games. He was the Columbus Clippers #6 pick in the 2012 inaugural draft and the IBL’s #2 prospect that year. Columbus dealt him to Michigan in 2014 for reliever Craig Trent.

11/12
Fisher Cats deal IF to Hooks for SP, prospect:
New Hampshire has sent 27 year old backup IF Lawrence Mulholland to Corpus Christi for 25 year old SP prospect Liu-chun Teoh and 18 year old OF prospect Bernard Bouquet. Mulholland has hit .195 in 144 games over the past 5 seasons. He’s a defensive infield guy. Teoh is destined for an IBL pen if he can manage his control issues. In 115 IP over the past 3 seasons he’s walked 134, K’d 119. The Hooks drafted Bouquet in the 1st round (6th overall) out of Snook HS in Texas in 2017.

Hooks and White Caps deal:
Corpus Christi also announced they’d dealt starter turned reliever Jason Green to West Michigan for 20 year old OF prospect Nate Sipes. Green is 38-41 5.56 lifetime in 144 games, 106 starts. Sipes is a former Fresno Grizzly 1st round pick out of Westchester HS in Los Angeles. He was part of the Shawn Calhoun trade in the middle of the 2016 season.

11/13
White Caps grab SP Henry:
27 year old SP Glen Henry (25-27 5.10 ERA) is headed to the West Michigan White Caps. Buffalo dealt him for 24 year old of prospect Rick Hudson. This will be the outfielders 5th organization after being drafted by Las Vegas in the 2014 June draft out of UCLA.

11/15
Arbitration Hearings:
Will Harris asked for 982 and we offered 750, team win.
Jorge Sanchez asked for 3M, we offered 2.2M, player win.
Arturo Rodriguez asked for 2.75M, we offered 2.2M, player win.
Mike Moore asked for 1.311M, we offered 1.1M, player win.

So our payroll now looks to be around 73M going into next season after arbitration.

11/17
Columbus, Sacramento make a deal:
Columbus has sent 25 year old IF Chris Darcy to Sacramento for 27 year old RP Juan Amaya and 19 year old OF prospect Carlos Gonzalez. Darcy is a career .203 hitter with 14 HR’s in 117 games. He was the 2016 AAA Hitter of the year. A very good IF with big time pop he will likely be a backup IF vs RHP and start up the middle for Sacramento vs LHP. Amaya appeared in 150 games the past 2 seasons and is 16-12 with 11 Saves career, and a 3.65 ERA. Gonzalez was signed out of the Domincan in 2016 and is a future CF with blazing speed and a left handed bat the projects to hit for average.

11/18
A day we knew would come. Jean Chartier and Alfredo Alejandrez have both declined arbitration and filed for free agency. We’ll look around at SS alternative’s, and work to make the best of the compensation picks we get. We’ll talk to Chartier at a minimum, to see if there is any chance of a deal on shorter terms. Their filing leaves us with 38 players on the 40 man. The one name that pops on our radar above all others is 24 year old Barry ZIto. Unfortunately I don’t think we have room for a big ticket item. Our payroll is now locked in a 75.3 M and our budget is at 89. With expenses and player dev costs we’d have to make a major move to get something to open up. Cobbling together info from various sources it’s sounding like our 19 budget will be in the 105 million dollar neighborhood.

IBL CAREER LEADERS: OPS
Alex Rodriguez (ALK) 1.033
Todd Helton (GB) 1.017
Curt Whimster (TUL) 1.008
Angelo Gomez (PIT) .981
Hugh Collins (CHI) .961

11/20
Bombers, Railcats trade Francisco’s:
Boston traded 19 year old IF prospect Francisco Diaz to Baltimore for 28 year old 2B Francisco Ordonez. Ordonez is a career .239 hitter with 51 doubles, 5 triples and 34 homers in 454 games. He was the Bombers every day 2B last season. A gold glove winner at 2B in 2012 for Staten Island. Diaz, the IBL’s #82 prospect entering this season, was Baltimore’s 2nd rounder in 2016 out of Windham RVT in Connecticut.

11/25
Vegas gets another Guzman:
Salvador Guzman is their 3, Hector Guzman is their #5, and now Las Vegas has Pedro Guzman as their #4 starter. Baltimore dealt the 26 year old Guzman to Vegas for starting Catcher Kelyn Preston. Preston is a career .278-33-287 hitter in 740 IBL games and the 2014 Frontier League Gold Glove winner behind the plate. Guzman is 16-21 5.39 in 47 IBL starts but is coming off a 6-2 3.18 year in which he made 9 starts.

11/26
Baltimore resigns 2B Young:
The Railcats resigned 2B Edward Young to a 2 year 15.2M dollar free agent contract. Baltimore was the front runner from the day Young filed, as he hit .279-18-81 for them last season.

Pittsburgh grabs All Star Harvey:
It was expensive, but 28 year old All Star pitchers tend to be. The Coastal League Champion Bulldogs, likely concerned over the late season injury to ace Vincent Bray, have signed 2017 Vegas 51 All Star Glen Harvey to a monster 7 year 117.3M dollar free agent deal. Harvey is 51-45 4.23 lifetime in 132 games. He had a career best 16-8 record last season with a 3.64 ERA in 229.2 IP.

El Paso gets a 3rd Ace:
Barry Zito signed a 3 year 52.1M dollar free agent contract with El Paso today. The 24 year old former Koufax winner will for a dominating trio for the Diablo rotation, teaming with former K leader Cory Elkins and 22 game winner Artie Johnson.

(Holy cow, that’s a hell of a top end. WAY fewer dollars than I was expecting, I thought he’d get the Harvey type deal or more. El Paso is loading up)

IBL SINGLE SEASON RECORD: TOTAL BASES
Bill Hill (SI) 449 ‘12
Gerald Wright (DAY) 446 ‘15
Cy May (HOU) 429 ‘12
Curt Whimster (TUL) 416 ‘17

11/27

Fisher Cats pilfer a closer:
New Hampshire has wasted no time spending the new ownerships money. Today inking former Tulsa Closer Stewart Ward to a 2 year 22.6M dollar free agent contract. Ward is a 2 time all star (’16-’17) and is 24-16 with 111 saves and a 3.15 ERA. The 26 year old will make 10.1M this year and 12.5 next.

11/28
El Paso lands Ichiro in 6 player deal!
The Diablos have landed 28 year old RF Ichiro Suzuki from the Dallas Texans for 5 players. El Paso sends 23 year old OF Bryan Long (2017 5th rounder, big time avg/OBP prospect) 21 year old OF prospect Doug Mccord (2017 2nd rounder, corner OF, power bat with big time speed) 21 year old OF prospect Harvey Cameron (2017 7th rounder, ++ speed, corner OF) 22 year old IF/OF prospect Jose Vega (2017 9th rounder) and 21 year old CF prospect Mike Rigney (minor league FA). Ichiro hit .305 with 12 homers, 65 RBI’s and stole a single season IBL record 73-100 bases last season, as well as winning the CL Gold Glove in right.

(Someone else has plans on building a dynasty, holy cow. They’re loaded for bear right now)

11/29
Dallas inks RP:
The Texans have signed former Bulldog RP Will Clark to a 2 year 9.44M dollar deal. Clark was 5-4 7 Saves in 82 games last season with a 3.62 ERA.

Edmonton welcomes back Clifton:
The Trappers have inked former 3B Toby Clifton to a 3 year 48.6M dollar free agent contract. The 3rd year is a 16.2M vesting option for 550 AB’s. Clifton started his IBL career in Edmonton, and is a career .278 hitter with 147 homers and 537 RBI’s. Had a career high 38 HR’s in 2013. Last year he hit .270-30-89 in 129 games for Sacramento.

Sacramento signs Hooks Closer Miller:
Former Corpus Christi Closer Jon Miller has signed a 3 year 19.8M dollar deal with Sacramento to be the setup man for Rivera Award winner Bill Barlow. Miller was 5-10 with 24 Saves and a 4.29 ERA in 57 games last season.

Unhappy Fritz dealt:
Staten Island gave Andy Fritz his wish, shipping him to Las Vegas for 33 year old 2B Kris Wright. Wright is a 2 time IBL All Star. To complete the deal the Yankees sent top prospect Juan Vasquez and 2.58M dollars to Vegas. Fritz is 29-25 with 30 Saves in 367 career games and a 3.12 ERA. Wright is a career .273/.363/.404 hitter in 872 IBL games. Vazquez was the Yankees 2017 Supplemental pick in round 1 of the 2017 draft.

River Cats add another reliever:
Apparently people just aren’t paying attention. Sacramento is following in the footsteps of a few franchises, and building a bullpen made up of closers. Today signing former LA Closer Julio Gonzalez to a 2 year 23.2M dollar deal, and announcing that Rivera Award winner Bill Barlow would be moving into the setup role. Gonzalez is a 4 time IBL All Star. He is 3rd all time with 222 career saves.
