A look at Chicago 81 games in

Our 'team page', cut and pasted to have more cool infos.....

This is a good club that, I feel, is at the beginning of what could truly be a dynasty. An older power arm at the top in Thompson, with what I hope is 3-4 years left of being that guy, a young power arm recently arrived (Rogers) that will assume the mantle, a solid rotation behind them with Alejandrez now in the slot he should be on a very good staff, 3. Add to that a kid in Zamora who will likely occupy a spot next year, if not September.

If I had a serious concern, which I do, it would be the pen. Torres is due back soon, but Pennington and Garcia are serious issues, as I don't know what's coming back when they do. Add to that the wretched underperformance of every reliever not named Cruz, Winston or Johnson. No idea where this would be without those three. Jeff Bentley has actually been a nice surprise as a LHP.

We're all over the league boards pitching, 1st or 2nd in every meaningful stat, with room to get better.

Offensively? Not even sure where to start. Right now we are the best hitting, fastest and most powerful lineup in the game. If it's possible the trade of Gutierrez made the offense better, as Coates has been phenomenal since arriving. Chartier could contend for a batting title at 22, Alexander is trying to make up the numbers lost in his 2 week absence, Morgan is just raking, Collins is, again imo, the best all around offensive player in the game. Luis Chavez is everything we'd hoped he'd be, and there is no easy out in the lower third of this order. I'd love to find a way to split the righties up, but for now it's nice that that is my biggest offensive concern. Health, as always is the key.

Oh and our .710 defensive efficiency ranks 2nd. These guys can catch too. If I do stay healthy I have one pressing decision. Where does Salinas go? And who does he replace? He's 24, ready, and a huge bat. He's my DH, or should be, soon (and likely will always be a DH). Chavez is the guy vs RH, Miller vs lefties. Chavez is 22, Miller 24. I need to open a permanent spot for Salinas, which means moving Chavez into the OF, which is a serious defensive downgrade unless I can put him in RF which would move Alexander to LF, or DH, where the Salinas issue becomes a 'problem'. Don't get me wrong, this is a great problem to have. Maybe I move 1 of Alexander, Chavez, Salinas, for a legit #1 prospect or "Ace", a Vincent Bray type Ace, a younger Walt Thompson type Ace. One of those 6 SP's on the top 10 prospect list?

The amazing thing about these sorts of dilemmas, without exception, they always work themselves out. No team has ever, in the history of the game, had too much pitching. A team (the Sox a few years back) cries about 7 SP's for 5 spots leaving camp, whines and talks about going to a 6 man rotation, then that same team is scrounging the waiver wire trying to trade for/sign, a SP for the final game of the season to try and get into the playoffs. It'll work itself out, and if need be I'll help it.

The other 'problem' I was talking about above, is Zamora. If he's ready, which I think he is, I bring him up and put another power righty in the pen and get his feet wet, or wetter, there. In anticipation of him breaking camp next year. After him the next kid even thought to be on my radar is Martinez, who's just moved to A ball after starting the season with 12.2 scoreless in Heavener. His control is scaring me though, our guys have it 4/9, and neither number is close to cutting it. I need this next move to see his command moving and the upside growing. Additionally Jorge Trujillo is set to make his professional debut at Heavener today. Zamora, Martinez, Trujillo, although insanely heavy on latin flavor, I would love to see that mix as my 3-5 behind Thompson and Rogers
