United States - Featherweights - Round 3 - Part 1
Round 3 - Part 1:
Willie Pep vs Jimmy Kelly - Kelly came to the understanding early that Pep couldn't seriously hurt him and was the aggressor throughout. Pep was his usual elusive self most of the bout however, landing well whenever Kelly got too close to earn the 11-4, 10-5 and 9-6 decision. Kelly's elimination removed the final fight-in candidate from the field.
Sandy Saddler vs Jackie Graves - Graves really took it to Saddler in the 1st round, but Saddler took over in the 2nd then hurt graves several times before the referee ended the bout in the 4th for the TKO. Most of the fans were unhappy with what they perceived as a premature stoppage, as was the corner of Graves, but this observer felt that Saddler was doing serious damage at the time of the stop.
Abe Attell vs Calvin Grove - Attell built up the early lead, but coasted in the middle rounds allowing Grove to get back in the fight. Attell then seemed to wake up again, taking the lion's share of the final rounds to earn the 9-5, 8-6 and 8-5 decision.
Johnny Kilbane vs Frankie Toledo - Both men were far more focused on defense than they were actually scoring points, making for some close rounds. Kilbane was a bit more accurate though, particularly in the later rounds to ern the 9-4, 7-6 and 7-5 decision.
Bobby Chacon vs Petey Hayes - Hayes shocked everyone in the 1st round, scoring a flash knockdown at the end of the round. Neither man was effective in the 2nd, but then Chacon started to find the mark in the 3rd, having Hayes left eye nearly closed at the end of the 7th. It was the 8th round that was Chacon's finest work however as he opened cuts over the left eye and under the right eye, then scored the KO shot with 4 seconds left in the round.
Benny Bass vs Leo Johnson - This one had more action than one would expect between a pair of stylists, with Johnson jumping out in front only to have Bass come back then score 4 knockdowns in the fatal 10th, the final one for the 10 count!
Tommy O'Toole vs Danny Kramer - Not much to pick from as both men spent their time outside with the exception of a few rounds. This made for very close scoring as the judges had it 7-6 Kramer, 8-5 O'Toole and 7-6 for the winner by split decision O'Toole.
Danny Lopez vs Jason Litzau - Lopez's management held a drawing prior to the fight to choose a fan to handle the water bottle in the Lopez corner for this bout. Our friend Lee won the drawing and got to see the fight up close & actually encourage his man throughout the bout! After splitting the first 2 rounds with good action as Lopez cut off the ring well in the 1st, Litzau moved well and countered effectively in the 2nd. In the 3rd however Lopez was able to get to his man, landing a series of body shots followed by a stiff uppercut that floored Litzau for the 8 count. Lopez was able to then follow up with bomb after bomb until the referee halted the bout for the Lopez TKO! Lee was able to hoist Lopez up on his shoulders and carry the victor around the ring!
