1871-1880: Defining 'Elite'
In ten seasons of play, 67 players have finished 1-2-3 in Player/Pitcher/Newcomer of the Year. I don't want to list, and you don't want to look at, 67 player profiles. Taking a cue from Bill James' Award Share, I took a similar step. For Player/Pitcher of the Year, 3 points for winning, 2 points for second, and 1 point for third. For Newcomer, 2.5 points for winning, 1.5 points for second and 0.5 points for third. The Average 'vote getter' in the Player of the Year category is 2.5, Pitcher of the Year 3.0. (Pitchers, because of the era, do much much better in the Newcomer Award than hitters do) By the lucky stars, that comes to 14 players on each side. Players will be presented in descending order of award points.
PS--Because of the new subleague added in 1880, some of the OPS+ for single seasons are off, but career OPS+ seem ok.
