Both. But, if you have the "Show & Use Player Personality Ratings" option turned on in your game, these blurbs can be highly important. They are verbal clues to combinations of these personality traits:
  • Leader Ability
  • Loyalty
  • Desire for Winning
  • Greed
  • Intelligence
  • Work Ethic
As you go through player profiles and compare those personality blurbs, you will start seeing correlations to high or low ratings in certain personality traits as indicated in their BNN Player Pages. With more experience, you will realize how some of these traits affect player development and performance.

For example, I never bother with players that have "Low" or "Very Low" ratings in both Intelligence and Work Ethic because those guys are likely not to ever play up to their potential. Read more about personality traits here: Out of the Park Baseball Manual

Here are some examples:
  • "Doesn't demand a lot of attention and often goes unnoticed" = Low Leader Ability
  • "[Player] had an illustrious academic track record, etc." = High Intelligence
  • "He's got a huge ego." = High Greed
  • "[Player] never shows a lack of effort." = High Work Ethic
  • "He has trouble keeping up." = Low Intelligence
Caveats:
  • Some blurbs really are just window-dressing, like "Just an average Joe" which basically means, well, he's just average overall.
  • Sometimes you see a combination blurb, like "Not a leader, but doesn't cause any trouble either" which seems to mean Low Leader Ability but also Low Greed.
  • This is from the manual and applies to both blurbs and traits:

Note: The effects of personalities are unpredictable, just as in the real world. Personalities might affect the game in ways other than what is described above, and personalities are not absolutes! For example, a player with a high loyalty might elect not to sign an extension with your team. Players will not always behave precisely according to their player personalities.
