One thing I'm not clear on is whether or not you are using finances. If you are using 1800's financials in a rookie-level league, that may be part of it. I would suggest disabling financials completely for that league or manually setting them all very low relative to MLB. After you change them all either way, you're probably going to want to use the "assign fictional financials to teams" button, and may also "assign fictional contracts to players" so that your changes will be reflected.

And as always, back up your league first so that you can "undo" it if you don't like it.
