I posted this a few days ago, but have received no reply, so I don't know anything more now on the subject than I did then.
I am entertaining an alternative theory that there were teams (or at least one) that scouted Clemente correctly and saw that the conventional wisdom had him rated lowly and decided they would try to steal him with a lower pick and use higher picks to take players known to be coveted by others. This would be savvy coding and if it is what takes place, it is a fantastic model for a human draft day strategy.
