The (Pittsburgh) Penguins were named because the nickname for their arena at the time, Pittsburgh Civic Arena, was "The Igloo". The name itself was put forward by the wife of part-owner Jack McGregor, Carol Dangerfield, based on this reasoning.
Of course... Youngstown had the name well before the hockey team did. Youngstown's name was chosen in 1933. Pittsburgh's came in 1966-1967. Clearly Pittsburgh was in awe of Youngstown for their excellent naming choice.
