• New York SS Brian Schmidt was diagnosed with a broken kneecap and is out for the year.

• A one-hitter? That’s one heck of a major-league debut for Bill Jackson. Can I send him back down after that?

• Sacramento signed long-time AAA manager Dan Schneider to a five-year contract to be their new field manager.

• I sense that Castro needs to regroup. I recalled 2B Ray Holliday for bench depth and sent Castro down to AAA.
