The national media contract setting reflects the nature of the national broadcasting contracts signed by sports leagues. The income received by such contracts is, in real life, divided equally amongst the teams in the league. So every club receives the same amount from the national media contract. (In MLB, this is worth roughly $30 million per team).
Local media contracts represent the broadcasting deals signed by each club individually. The value of these in real life varies considerably per team. (The Yankees pull in over $90 million per year from their local television deal; the Rays earn about $18 million.)
