5 SPs - including 3 lefties
6 RPs - 1 leftie
1 CL
2 Cs
6 IFs
5 OFs
Initially I'd add ..
3 SPs
4 RPs
0 CL (have loads of RPs who can do the job to a decent level)
1 C
4 IFs
3 OFs
.... But I don't want to make a rookie mistake
Any insight would be much appreciated

Not sure that you need to include any Starting Pitchers in your additional 15 to be honest, maybe just the one if he’s say a good prospect. If you’re that unlucky that you get two SPs injured at the same time and for not long enough to go on the 15 Day DL, then simply demote one of your additional batters and get a SP in.
MRs are in a similar bracket, you don’t really need any, unless you actually have some that are good prospects that you might want to give an innings or two in game’s (you’re managing) and have already won/lost by say the top of the 7th. The one pitcher I’ve tended to use more in September has actually been a 2nd CL. For example, I had a good leftie closer but in September used him in tandem with a good up and coming rightie CL who just missed out on the 25 man roster. Worked a treat in close games with a lead, effectively doubling the innings my CL could pitch or giving my #1 CL some extra rest.

Positions don't matter to me either. Just if they can possibly contribute to the team; in the callup year or the near future.

I think it can be a big error not to use up the whole of your 40 man roster. It gives you more options to pinch-hit; pinch-run and use your better defensive players (who can’t hit) in close games. It means that in clutch situations you don’t have to hit with a guy who’s gone 0-4 but is your only 25-man 3B option. You can pinch-hit with those batters who are good hitters but useless in the field and pinch-run and play defense with your quick/good position players. Can be worth the 2/3 extra games you might need to get into the playoffs.
I tend to go with something like this, depending on the qualities of my Minor Leaguers:
SP 1
MR/CL 2
C 1/2
IF 5/6
OF 5/6
Of course if you not in danger of missing/making the playoffs, it’s a great opportunity to try out some of the younger players on your Minor League roster.
