Dodgers Survive Wild Ride In Eleven
Series Lead To LA With 11-10 Win In 30 Hit Game

Jack Murphy Stadium - Somewhere many could expect that a game like this one was coming in this series between two teams that have been teetering back and forth and really have bad blood with one another. All caution was thrown to the wind tonight in San Diego and in the end the Dodgers came up survivors with an 11-10 lead to go back to Los Angeles tired, but one win away from completing their task.

New starters for both teams introduced Burt Hooten and Mark Thurmond to the mound. Neither man had what it would take in this one and the result of the game would come four hours after the first pitch in the California heat.

It was clear with the series tied that both teams did everything they could for this game. The Padres held a one run lead into the 5th inning where the Dodgers finally broke through on a Ken Landreux single and an inning later Mike Scioscia gave the Dodgers a 2-1 lead with an RBI single. In the 7th inniing things quickly changed and the type of game became offensive.

With the one run lead the Dodgers opened things up in the top of the inning when Dusty Baker and Ron Cey drove in runs to increase the Dodger lead to 4-1. The a rare error by Steve Garvey at first base opened the door for two more runs as the Padres bullpen struggled in a 6-1 deficit.

In the bottom of the 7th the Padres rallied and with a run in and Hooten still on the mound, Graig Nettles hit a long fly to right center field that just cleared the wall scoring two runs ahead of him. The blow cut the lead to 6-5 and brought Jack Murphy Stadium to life.

The comeback was complete in the next inning for the flying Padres. Bobby Brown doubled in a run to tie the score and then Gary Templeton gave his team the lead scoring Brown from second with a single. The Padres then looked to Goose Gossage to close out the 9th. Pinch hitter Rick Monday lead off the inning as a pinch hitter for the Dodgers and wouldnt you know it Monday crushed a fastball 430 feet to tie the game straight away. Gossage again looks very weak at the closer role in this series.

The drama was only beginning and in the 11th the Dodgers broke through again as Reggie Smith homered off Luis DeLeon to give the Dodgers a two run lead. The Dodgers added two more runs and had what seemed a comfortable lead of four runs with three outs to go.

Ron Roenicke opened the wild 11th with a solo home run and then a single and double greeted Terry Forster and brought the tying run to the plate. Tony Gwynn hit a sacrafice fly to socre a run and then with two outs Forster mishandled an easy chance for an error to score another run on a play that should have ended this game. Dave Stewart was then called on with two down and the tying run on first base.

Kurt Bevaqua came up to represent the tying run and earned a walk from Stewart. Bobby Brown then was fooled and hit a tapper back to the mound and this time the pitcher made the play to end the game and take hearts out of the fans throughts.

A great game all around between these two teams where both sides fought to the end leaving nothing behind. Now the series goes back Dodger Stadium and the Padres will be forced to win two games on the road.
