I've decided I am a big fan of the storyline feature.

When Matt Carter, a pitcher for the Groton Green Sox, blew out his elbow, I took a close look at his player profile, mainly to see if he was likely to recover. I noticed that he had a National Popularity rating of Very Popular and a Local Popularity rating of Extremely Popular. From that, I envisioned a young pitcher who was a fan favorite, the kind of guy any baseball fan would pull for, even if you don't like the Green Sox much.

This item showed up in the league news on June 27. I've edited it to add a few details, but the game generated the basic story.

Carter Working Hard to Give Back

When Matt Carter isn't on the diamond, he enjoys working with the less fortunate.

Carter is currently recovering from elbow surgery, and while he is working hard to get back on the field, he is finding time to assist underprivileged children here in Groton. This spring, Carter visited elementary schools and read to the students. He also supported food and clothing drives during the holiday season.

Explaining his reasoning, he said, "Growing up poor in Westerville [Ohio], my family and I often had to rely on the community to help us get through tough times. Now that I'm doing well financially, I want to give back and I am working hard to try and get my team and teammates to do the same.

"Honestly, I do this for selfish reasons," he continued with a smile. "Nothing makes me feel better than working with these kids and helping them to succeed."

Touches like this give OOTP the immersion level that makes these fictional players come alive. Matt Carter can seem almost as real to me as Cliff Lee or Stephen Strasburg.
