The Mariners continued their hot play, stretching out their lead as high as five games in the AL West. Then they played the Angels. The Angels swept us in a 3-game set, and three games later, we set to face off again, with the Mariners leading by two games. A single Seattle win would clinch the division title.

But the M's lost the first two. King Felix did not come up big this time, and now the stage is set for Game 162 - winner goes to the playoffs. Jason Vargas (8-9, 4.28) vs. C.J. Wilson (13-14, 3.97).

The goal wasn't to make the playoffs this year - we want long-term success. But to get this close and not make it would be disappointing.

Elsewhere in the league, the Red Sox and Yankees are also in a "one-game playoff" situation, tied for the AL East lead. Lester vs. Pineda.

Real-time simulation. Let's go.
