Yankees In Full Control
Fourteen Hits Enough For Hoyt To Top Big Train
Griffith Stadium - The joys of the first game of this series have quickly faded away like a Ruth moonshot into the sky. The Washington Senators sent their ace to the mound to try and tie this series but even he, less then his best, could not hold off the Yankee offense and took the loss. Now the Senators face the impossible down 3 games to 1 after this desicive 7-2 loss.
All hopes ride on the arm of Walter Johnson and the Big Train took the ball despite rumors of a bad back and lasting effects from his game one start. It was evident from the beginning that Johnson didnt have his best stuff and the moment he grooved one into the zone to Babe Ruth in the first inning, the story was laid out.
After a hit and a walk Ruth raised a shot just over the left field wall for a three run home run his third of the series. Ruth has batted .471 in the series leaving little doubt that his legend is well worth the press. Ruth doesnt miss mistakes and anything less then a perfect pitch will be punished. The Yankees would add another before the end of the first and any air of momentum that was in the park was quckly extinguished.
Waite Hoyt pitches as well as anyone with a lead and he kept the Senators hitters guessing and off the bases. The Yankees through Pat Collins added another run to make the game 5-0 and in many ways Johnson was lucky not to be behind even more. Hoyt would actualy go the distance in this one throwing 129 pitches and not walking a single man. The Yankees walked off with their heads held high in a 7-2 win.
The Senators now need to win three in a row with two of them coming in New York. As good as the Yankees are the idea of such a turnaround is about as likely as the Babe passing a plate of food.
