I can't remember the specifics of the rule, but a run doesn't necessarily have to be a direct result of the error. That is why you can see someone give up something like 8 runs, and have 0 or 1 be earned. Basically, if the run scores after what would have been the third out (the errored play), runs scored after that point would be unearned.
Perhaps someone could explain it better, but I think that is the basics of the ERA rule.
