I tend to avoid college players with low/very low work ethic ratings... unless... the have a high/very high desire to win and you will be placing them onto a winning team. In those situations, my anecdotal evidence suggests that the desire to win trumps everything else and most of the time the players reach their full potential, or very close, without much of a problem.
The work ethic thing for me always seems to rear it's ugly head with the dreaded snowflake icon. Slumps seem to last much longer the lower the work ethic rating.
