Just to give an update: I was able to download the database and started to code an importer today. I have the teams done and will continue with the players tomorrow.
We will tweak our database to reflect the syntax of this database so we will add all additional leagues/teams/player the same way. A great head start for our researchers, so thanks for posting the link!
