October 28th, 2011

The New York Yankees swept the National League Champion Atlanta Braves in the World Series in 2011 and captured their 27th World Series Title. The Yankees started out slow in the American League East this year but caught fire after the Allstar breal and would end up winning the division with a Major League best record of 100-62. In the first round of the playoffs they drew the Cleveland Indians who pushed the Yankees to the brink but they would take the decisive game #5 and advance to the American League Championship Series to face the AL West Champs the Texas Rangers. The Rangers were no match for the Yankees who cruised to a 4-2 series victory and then they would defeat the National League Champion Atlanta Braves 4-0 to earn the World Series Title.

The Yankees have the highest payroll in the majors and it paid off this season as a cast of stars that included SP C.C. Sabathia, SP Phil Hughes, SP Ivan Nova, SP Freddy Garcia, MR Rafael Soriano, MR David Robertson, CL Mariano Rivera, SS Derek Jeter, C Russel Martin, 1B Mark Texiera, 2B Robinson Cano, 3B Alex Rodriguez and CF Curtis Granderson were the leading cast of characters that lead the Yankees to the title.
