Hmmm, oddly, at least for the small number of seasons for which I have the figures, when one compares the number of players on the DL as of opening day and the number on the DL as of August 31st, the latter is higher. Below is the average number of players per club on the DL as of opening day and August 31st, respectively.
1991: 2.231 / 3.846
1992: 2.654 / 4.692
1993: 2.429 / 4.143
1997: 2.643 / 4.500
1999: 2.400 / 5.667
2001: 3.467 / 5.333
2004: 2.667 / 5.900
2005: 2.633 / 5.133
The average number of players on the DL as of opening day is more commonly available. Here is what that looked like from 2000-11:
2000: 3.000
2001: 3.467
2002: 3.300
2003: 2.567
2004: 2.667
2005: 2.633
2006: 2.100
2007: 3.300
2008: 3.500
2009: 2.267
2010: 2.600
2011: 3.233
