Dodgers And Giants prevail!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One Game Playoff Set For Tonight
Los Angeles- With absolutely everything on the line, the Dodgers got a brilliant pitching performance from Bill Singer, who held the Astros to just a single run on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts in a complete game 8-1 victory. At the plate, the Dodgers got a big game out of SS Maury Wills who went 3 for 5 with a double, a 2 run triple, and three runs scored, his constant presence on the base paths also seemed to distract Houston pitching, despite the fact that he didn't even attempt a steal. LA also got a clutch homer from catcher Tom Haller, his second in two days. The Dodger victory eliminates the Astros and sets up a one game playoff against, who else, but the hated San Francisco Giants for the right to be called NL Western Division champions. The Giants earned their way into the playoff with a 5-3 victory over the stuborn Padres, who scored three times in the ninth inning before finally going down with the tying runs on base. Dave Marshall and Willie McCovey each hit homers for the Giants, while Gaylord Perry, despite a rocky 9th, finished the game and earned the win, his 18th. Today's playoff will be played at Dodger Stadium with veteran pitcher Jim Bunning(16-10, 3.14 ERA) going for the Dodgers against the Giants Bobby Bolin(8-14, 4.50 ERA). Bunning, who began the year in Pittsburgh was acquired by the Dodgers on August 15th, and since then has been the best hurler on the club, going 5-0 with a sparkling 1.58 ERA.
