Wild Day Ends With Giants, Dodgers, And Astros All Tied!
San Francisco- Willie McCovey was 3 for 3 with 2 homers and 3 RBI, Tito Fuentes added a homer, and starting pitcher Juan Marichal won for the 24th time this year, allowing just 1 run on 5 hits while walking two and striking out 10, as San Francisco defeated the last place Padres 5-1. Meanwhile down in Los Angeles, the desperate Dodgers overcame a 5-0 first inning deficit when back to back 7th inning singles by Willie Davis and Tom Haller put the Dodgers ahead to stay in a thrilling 9-8 comeback victory. What all this means is that we have a three way tie atop the division heading into the final day of the season. A Giants victory over the Padres later today guarantees them a spot in a one game playoff against the winner of tonight's Dodgers-Astros game in Dodger Stadium, a loss and it all over for the Giants, with the winner of the LA-Houston game becoming champion. Here's the pitching match-ups:
San Diego(Al Santorini 11-17, 4.05 ERA)
San Francisco(Gaylord Perry 17-12, 2.60 ERA)
Houston(Denny LeMaster 12-13, 2.30 ERA)
Los Angeles(Bill Singer 16-12, 2.04 ERA)
