Different Game, Same Result
10 Inning Drama Goes To Mets For Series Stronghold

Shea Stadium - Pinch hitter Duffy Dyer singled to right field at the perfect time with a man on in the 10th inning to score the winning run of a very tight and well played game. Game two of this series was much diffrent in contrast with the opener, but to the Giants dismay, the result was very much the same. The Mets leave their part of town with a two games to none series lead.

Jerry Koosman was really the man of this night as the Mets starter went the distance of 10 innings throwing 163 pitches, Koosman just didnt want to come out of this game. Giant starter Ruben Gomez threw 137 pitches of his own matched Koosman until he was pulled from the game in the 9th inning.

In the 4th inning Ken Boswell got the miracle Mets on the board with a two out single. The Mets have been excellent hitting with two out and men on. A sacrafice fly tied the game but the Mets again took the lead in the 6th inning and Art Shamsky lined a double to right that scored two players and gave the home side a two run lead. The Giants didnt give up or fall away like they did in game one, they had plenty of fight left in them.

The Giant fight would come in the form of the long ball, and the moment would come in the 8th inning. After Whitey Lockman walked, Wes Westrum hammered a pitch to left field and the Giants for the first time had hope as they tied the game at three. In the 9th the Giants had a chance to move ahead with men on 2nd and 3rd but Don Mueller struck out swinging in a scoring chance they would regret.

Hoyt Wilhelm came on in the 9th and was the man on the mound in the 10th as the game moved to extra innings. Wayne Garrett opened the inning with a double to right followed by Donn Clendenon who lined a single but the winning run was held up. After strike out, the Giants thought they might be able to fight out of it, but the Dyer winning hit had eyes and gave the Mets their second win and full control of this series.

Now the scene shifts to the Polo Grounds and the Giants hope the change means wins for them or the series may be much shorter then many expected. Sal Maglie will have the pressure as the man on the mound for the Giants in game three.
